Course description
The LLC course "Law and Information Technology in Europe" (5 EC) provides insight into the interaction between European Law and Information Technology.
" “The Internet is changing the world we live in. It is a change no less significant than the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. Over the last two decades, information technologies and the Internet have been transforming the way companies do business, the way students learn, the way scientists carry out research and the way in which governments provide services to their citizens.”
This statement of the European Commission (“Towards a knowledge based Europe, The European Union and the information society”, October 2002) emphasized the importance of the Information Society for Europe. And one thing is for sure: ‘to get it right’ implies to re-examining existing legal regimes, in particular regarding telecommunications infrastructures and services, the compatibility between networks, the protection of intellectual property rights and of privacy, and competition and market access. By now, the Council of the European Union and the Parliament have issued numerous directives in these and other fields. And more are yet to come.
