Twee Leidse winnaars Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award 2011

Leidse promovendus Maarten Den Heijer en Leidse Masterstudent Dirk Ormel winnen de Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award.

Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award

Maarten den Heijer won op 9 december 2011 de eerste prijs voor dissertaties met zijn op 7 april 2011 in Leiden cum laude verdedigde proefschrift Europe and Extraterritorial asylum. De Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award bestaat voor deze categorie uit een bedrag van € 3000,--. Het boek van Den Heijer bestudeert de juridische implicaties van migratiecontrole buiten de landsgrenzen. Promotores waren prof mr. P. Boeles en prof. mr R.A. Lawson.

Dirk Ormel heeft met zijn in Leiden geschreven Master scriptie 'Ne pas tuer la poule aux oeufs d’or' de eerste prijs voor scripties gewonnen. Hij ontvangt een bedrag van € 1250,--. Zijn scriptie gaat over de vraag of illegale exploitatie van natuurlijke bronnen als een oorlogsmisdrijf kan worden beschouwd. Scriptiebegeleider was mevr. prof. dr. L. van den Herik.

Juryrapport

In het juryrapport wordt van de studie van den Heijer gezegd: "The topic is conceptually fascinating and also raises many problems from the normative point of view. The author has a keen eye both for the disturbing empirical practices related to keeping asylum seekers away from European borders and for the challenges to international law and to legal theory in this respect. (…) The jury finds this book a very well-written, well-documented and well-structured piece of academic work on a very interesting subject that is both topically and socially relevant."

Van de scriptie van Ormel zegt de jury: "Ormel’s thesis constitutes a creative and independent product. He has chosen to limit himself to a clearly defined and not overly large topic and he has carefully and precisely studied the relevant legal materials in the field. Ormel shows a very good understanding of the subject, and the social relevance of the thesis is well-argued. The result of his work is a well-written, convincingly constructed, and innovative piece of work, which is an example for all Master’s theses in the field."
